I Set Out The Chairs, He Preaches

This message is for a man of forty-six setting out chairs an hour before a meeting he has set up for nineteen years, who has wanted to be the one who stands up and speaks since he was twenty-two, and who has watched three younger men be given that and be right for it

An hour before, and the hall is his, which is the part of the evening he genuinely loves and would not give up.

Ninety-six chairs. He does eight rows of twelve with an aisle, because he tried ten rows of ten once and it was wrong in a way he could not explain to anybody but which cost the room something. He knows which chairs have the wobble and puts them at the ends. He turns the heat on ninety minutes early because the hall takes that long in the winter and nobody has ever noticed that the room is warm.

Nineteen years of Tuesdays.

At about half past six a younger man will come in with a bag over his shoulder and a folder under his arm, and at ten past seven he will stand up in front of those ninety-six chairs, and he will be good. Genuinely good. Not polished. Better than polished.

And the man who put out the chairs will sit in the third row from the back, on the end, where he always sits, and he will listen properly and be glad and mean it.

He has wanted to be the one who stands up since he was twenty-two.

That is the whole thing and it is that simple. Not for the attention, which he has examined himself about at length and honestly. Because something happens in a room when a person says a true thing well, and he has wanted to be a part of that specific transaction his entire adult life.

He has watched three younger men be handed it in nineteen years. Every one of them was right for it. He has never once wished it away from any of them, which is a thing he is quietly proud of and which does not help at half past six.

What is not on this page

Straight out, so you can read the rest with the chairs still in your hands.

Nothing here is going to tell you what you have instead. There is no consolation gift coming at the end, no list, no paragraph that reveals your real thing and expects you to be pleased about it. That would be a page telling you what you are, and this site does not do that and will not start tonight.

And nothing here is going to promise you that it will come. I do not know that. Nobody does. Anybody who tells a man of forty-six that the thing he has wanted since twenty-two is on its way is guessing with somebody else's life.

You are not being managed through a disappointment, and there is no trade being set up here. That is not me being careful with you. Scripture is what handles this, in a conversation between two men on a beach, and the Holy Spirit has never once needed a man reconciled to a substitute before He would speak to him.

Peter asks about somebody else

There is a scene at the very end of John that people find abrupt, and it is the most useful thing in the book for a man setting out chairs.

Jesus has just told Peter, in some detail, what Peter's own life is going to cost him. And Peter, immediately, does the thing every human being does.

Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.John 21:21-22

Read the tone carefully, because everybody reads it as a slap and it is not one.

What is that to thee. That is not you have no business asking. It is a genuine question about relevance, and the answer to it is nothing. The other man's assignment is not information Peter needs in order to live his own life, and Peter has just been handed his own and has looked away from it in about four seconds.

And then: follow thou me. Emphatic. Thou. As opposed to him.

You are being handed your own life back by somebody who is not comparing you to anybody, and the question about the other man was answered with nothing rather than with a ranking. I am not softening that. John 21:22 refuses to place the two men on a scale at all, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written line like that and makes it land on a man in an empty hall at half past five.

The wanting is not a fault

Now something that needs saying plainly, because you have been quietly treating it as one.

Wanting it is not envy. You have watched three men receive it and been glad every time and you did not have to manufacture the gladness. That is not what envy looks like from the inside and you know it.

What you have is a longing, which is a different thing entirely, and Scripture is completely unembarrassed by longing. Hannah wanted a child. David wanted to build a house for God and was told plainly that he would not. Paul wanted to go to Spain. None of them is written up as a man with a problem.

David is the closest to you, actually. He was told no about the temple and he spent the rest of his life gathering the materials for a building somebody else would put up.

You have been carrying a longing rather than nursing a sin, and Scripture handles longing openly instead of correcting it out of people. The word records the wanting without embarrassment in half a dozen lives, and the Spirit who searches all things has known about twenty-two for twenty-four years and has never once filed it as jealousy.

What handing it over is and is not

So here is the action, and I want to be exact about it, because the wrong version of this is cruel.

Handing it over is not deciding you never wanted it. That is a lie and it will not hold past Thursday.

It is not deciding it will never happen. You do not know that either.

It is saying the thing out loud, once, in your own voice, and putting it in His hands rather than carrying it. Which means it stops being the thing you privately arbitrate every Tuesday at half past six and becomes something He is holding, and what He does with it is His.

You are able to put it down without pretending you never wanted it, and the word does not require a man to stop longing before he can hand something over. The whole shape of that beach conversation is a man being given back his own following, and the Spirit who was given to help our infirmities is not asking you to talk yourself out of anything first.

The breakthrough

So come back to the hall, and eight rows of twelve, and the wobbly chairs at the ends, and the heat that has been on since five.

The younger man was never the injury. He is good, he is right for it, and you have never once wished it away from him.

The injury is twenty-four years of a longing that has been arbitrated privately every single Tuesday, never said out loud, and quietly reclassified by you as something a better man would not still be feeling.

You can say it this evening. Once. Out loud. And then put it in His hands and leave it there, and nothing about that requires you to stop wanting it or to pretend anything.

You are free to say the thing you have wanted out loud and hand it over right now, and it is not envy, not ingratitude and not a failure of nineteen years of faithful Tuesdays. That is John 21:22 refusing to put two men on a scale, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a written line into ground a man can stand on in an empty hall with a chair in each hand, and God has never made anybody as a second choice, and He was not out of the good ones the year you were born.

That is not a decision and it changes nothing about tonight. It is one sentence, said once, before they come in.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in the hall, in the truck, wherever you are standing when you finish reading. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that standing has been given to you rather than earned across nineteen years of Tuesdays, which is exactly why a man who has wanted something for twenty-four years can speak like this. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely accurate, and how any of it unfolds from here is His to decide. What is being asked of you is one thing handed over and one ordinary thing named. That is small enough for this evening, and it stands on the Name and not on how convinced you feel.

  1. Thing I have wanted since I was twenty-two, you are handed over this morning. Scripture has Jesus answer a man asking about somebody else with what is that to thee, follow thou me, and that is not a rebuke, it is a man being handed his own life back.
  2. Verdict that says a better man would have stopped wanting it by now, get out of this hall. The Holy Spirit searches all things and the word records longing in half a dozen lives without correcting it out of anybody, and in the name of Jesus I am putting it in His hands and standing where I am.
  3. Lord, You made me deliberately and You did not run out of the good ones by the time You got to me. I thank You, because You have never once compared me to that man or to anybody, and tonight I am setting out these chairs gladly.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
