Made This WayIsaiah 64:8

They Bring Me The Logistics

This message is for a woman of thirty-one who organizes everything her friends do and has wanted since she was nineteen to be the one they call at midnight instead, and who has watched the same three people be called at midnight for a decade while her phone stays quiet

Half past eight on a Wednesday and six of them are around a kitchen island in an apartment that comfortably holds four.

Takeout containers open. Somebody has drawn a plan on a whiteboard that lives on that wall for reasons nobody remembers, and half of it has already been rubbed out and redrawn twice.

They are organizing a thing. A weekend away, six months out, for about twenty people. And what has happened, over the last forty minutes, is what always happens, which is that the whole thing has quietly become hers.

She does not mind. She is going to enjoy the spreadsheet more than she will enjoy the weekend, and she knows that about herself and it is fine.

She is thirty-one. This has been her role in every friendship group she has been in since she was about fifteen: the one who makes the thing actually happen. Without her, roughly forty percent of the good memories these six people have would simply not exist, because nobody would have booked anything.

And here is the thing she has wanted since she was nineteen and has never said.

She has never once been called at midnight.

Not by any of them. Not in twelve years. And she knows exactly who does get called, because it comes up: three people, the same three, and one of them is in this kitchen right now with a container of noodles.

She is the one you call about the deposit. She is not the one you call when the thing you have been dreading actually happens.

And she cannot say a word about this, because it sounds like a woman asking to be told she is deep, and because she loves these people, and because there is no version of the sentence that does not make the person hearing it feel accused.

Where this does not go

Straight up, so you can read the rest without waiting for the pivot.

This page is not going to tell you what you have instead. There is no compensating thing at the bottom, no list, no paragraph that names your real gift and expects you to feel better. That would be a page telling you what you are, and this site does not do that.

And it is not going to tell you that organizing is secretly the deeper thing. That is a compliment handed over in place of an answer and you would see it coming.

And it is not going to promise you the phone will ring. Nobody knows that.

You are not being consoled here, and there is no swap being offered. That is not caution on my part. Scripture handles this in a single image from a prophet, and the Holy Spirit has never once needed a woman satisfied with a substitute before He would speak to her.

The clay is not consulted, and that is the good news

Here is the sentence, and everybody quotes it as though it were about submission and it is at least as much about relief.

But now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; and we all are the work of thy hand.Isaiah 64:8

We are the clay.

Which means, first and most practically, that the shape was not your call. You did not decide at fifteen to be the one who books things. You did not fail to develop into the one who gets called at midnight through some deficiency of effort.

And second, and better: clay does not audition. There is nothing in that image where the clay has to make a case. Isaiah is not describing a material under review. He is describing a thing being made by somebody whose hand is on it.

You are the work of His hand, currently, and the shape you came out was decided by the one holding you rather than by anything you did or failed to do. I am not stretching that. Isaiah 64:8 puts the potter and the clay in the plainest possible relation, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written line like that and lands it on a woman at a kitchen island on a Wednesday night.

Why nobody calls, and why it is not a verdict

Now something practical, because it will take a certain kind of sting out of tonight.

You are not called at midnight because everybody around you has learned that you are the person who fixes things. And when a person's life comes apart at midnight, the last thing they want is somebody who will fix it. They want somebody who will sit in it.

That is not a judgment on your depth. It is a fact about the role you have occupied brilliantly for twelve years, and roles are extraordinarily good at teaching people what to bring you.

I am not telling you to change it. That is not this page's business and I cannot see your friendships.

I am telling you what the silence at midnight is evidence of, and it is not evidence of what you have been afraid it is evidence of.

You have not been assessed and found shallow by six people who love you, and the quiet phone has been reporting on a role rather than on a person. The word puts the shaping in the potter's hand rather than in the opinion of the room, and the Spirit who searches all things has been at that island all evening and is not conducting the assessment you fear.

Handing it over, exactly

Here is the action, and it has to be said precisely, because the careless version does damage.

Handing it over is not deciding you never wanted it.

It is not deciding it will never happen.

It is not deciding that organizing is your gift and being content. Nobody here is telling you what your gift is.

It is saying the thing out loud, once, in your own voice, and putting it into His hands rather than carrying it round every kitchen island for another twelve years.

You are able to put it down without pretending you never wanted it, and Scripture never once asks a person to feel differently before she can hand something over. The image of the potter leaves the clay free of having to argue for itself, and the Spirit who was given to help our infirmities is not waiting for you to be settled about it first.

The breakthrough

So come back to the island, and the whiteboard with the plan half rubbed out, and six people talking over each other, and the spreadsheet you are going to enjoy more than the weekend.

The organizing was never the injury. It is real, it is a gift to those six people, and about forty percent of their good memories exist because you booked something.

The injury is twelve years of a quiet phone read as a verdict on your depth, carried alone, never said out loud because every version of the sentence sounded like a woman fishing or a woman accusing her friends.

You can say it tonight. Once. Out loud. And then hand it over, without pretending you never wanted it and without accepting a compliment in place of an answer.

You are free to say the thing you have wanted out loud and put it in His hands right now, and it is not fishing, not an accusation and not ingratitude for six people who love you. That is Isaiah 64:8 putting the shaping in the potter's hand, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a written line into ground a woman can stand on at a kitchen island at half past eight, and God has never made anybody as a second choice, and He was not out of the good ones the year you were born.

That is not a decision and it changes nothing about the weekend away. It is one sentence, said once, before you leave.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, at the island, in the car, wherever you are standing when you finish reading. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that standing has been given to you rather than earned across twelve years of arrangements, which is exactly why the woman with the spreadsheet can speak like this. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely accurate, and how any of it unfolds from here is His to decide. What is being asked of you is one thing handed over and one ordinary thing named. That is small enough for tonight, and it stands on the Name and not on how convinced you feel.

  1. Thing I have wanted since I was nineteen, you are handed over today. Scripture says we are the clay and He is the potter and we are all the work of His hand, and clay does not get a vote on the shape and does not need one.
  2. Verdict I have read into a quiet phone for twelve years, get out of this kitchen. The Holy Spirit searches all things and the word puts the shaping in the potter's hand rather than in the opinion of a room, and in the name of Jesus I am putting this in His hands tonight.
  3. Lord, You made me deliberately and You did not run out of the good ones by the time You got to me. I thank You, because Your hand has been on this the whole time, and tonight I am handing it to You gladly.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
