Second song. Every week. That is when it happens and she has stopped being surprised by it.
The room is full and the band is good and the sound is right, and she is on the front row where she has stood for seven years, and her voice is doing exactly what her voice does, which is the thing people compliment her on in the parking lot afterward.
And somewhere in the second song she goes out.
Not visibly. Nobody has ever seen it and she is not performing anything false, which she has interrogated herself about at length. She means the words. She would say them under oath. It is more that there is a place inside her that used to be involved in this and is not involved anymore, and she has no idea when it stopped being involved, and she can carry the whole hour without it.
Seven years on that team. Twelve years in that church. The voice everybody knows.
And here is why she has never said one word about it to a living soul.
Because of who she is in that building. She is the one who is up front. She is the one people quote. A woman in her position saying she goes hollow in the second song is not a confession, it is a bomb, and she knows exactly what it would do to two of the younger singers who watch her, and she would rather carry it for another seven years than do that.
So on the drive home she is fine, and at rehearsal on Thursday she is fine, and once, in a hotel room on a trip, she said half of a sentence out loud and then stopped herself.
What will not be asked of you
Let me clear this first, because a woman in your position reads everything looking for where it is going.
Nothing on this page is going to tell you to step down, take a break, talk to your leader, or say anything to anybody. Not today and not by implication at the end. Nobody here can see your team, your church, or those two younger singers, and a page that cannot see them has no business steering you.
And nothing here is going to hand you a diagnosis or tell you what you should be doing instead. There is no list at the bottom and no assessment coming.
You are not being maneuvered anywhere, and there is nothing you have to decide about any of it today. That is not me being careful with you. Scripture is what makes room for the honest sentence before any decision, and the Holy Spirit has never once required a woman to have a plan before He would meet her.
Paul asks the question nobody asks
Everybody knows the chapter. Almost nobody notices that Paul puts a question in it that has your name on it.
If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling?1 Corinthians 12:17
He is arguing against a church that had a hierarchy of gifts, and the thing to notice is which direction his question runs.
He is not defending the ear against the eye. He is asking what happens to a body where everything visible has been made the standard.
Where were the hearing. That is a question about loss. In a body where the eye is the thing to be, the hearing does not get honored less. It does not exist.
Which is a strange and quite specific mercy for somebody standing on a front row, because it means the chapter itself contains the possibility that a person can be in the visible place and not be the eye.
You are permitted to be standing in the most visible room in that building and to know it is not your room, and the chapter itself leaves space for exactly that. I am not straining the verse. 1 Corinthians 12:17 asks what a body loses when the visible becomes the measure, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written question like that and makes it land on a woman in a second song.
The hollow is not the same as cold
Now the accusation you have been running on yourself for years, said out loud so you can look at it.
You have been reading the hollowness as evidence about your relationship with God. As though a woman who genuinely loved Him would not go out in the second song, and therefore going out means something has cooled, and therefore saying it would be admitting to something.
Watch what you actually did with it, though.
You interrogated yourself about whether you meant the words. You concluded that you did. You have kept going for seven years without a single person noticing, and you have carried it silently to protect two younger women.
Cold does not do that. Cold stops interrogating itself in about year two.
You have not gone cold toward God, you have gone hollow in a room, and those are two different reports about two different things. The word distinguishes a body's parts by function rather than by devotion, and the Spirit who searches all things has been on that front row every week and has never once read your silence as coldness.
Where the real cost has landed
And here is the part underneath, which has nothing to do with the team.
For years there has been a real, weekly, describable fact about your life that has never been said to God out loud. Not out of rebellion, and not out of pride. Because it seemed dangerous to say even privately, in case saying it started something you could not stop.
So it has been carried alone rather than handed over. That is a different arrangement and it costs several times more.
He has known since the second year. Nothing you say today is news to Him.
You are welcome to bring Him the sentence you have been afraid to finish, and He has never once asked you to pretend a second song is what it is not. Scripture is full of people saying flat, unfinished, unflattering things to God without dressing them first, and the Spirit who helps our infirmities is not waiting for you to phrase it safely.
So come back to the front row, and the second song, and a voice doing what your voice does while you are somewhere else.
The team was never the injury. They are good, the band is good, and those two younger singers are right to watch you.
The injury is seven years of a weekly fact carried in complete silence, treated as evidence against your own heart, and never once brought to God because you were afraid of what saying it might start.
You can say it today. Once. To Him. And saying it starts nothing, accuses nobody, and commits you to nothing at all.
You are free to say the true thing out loud right now, and it is not a resignation, not a confession of coldness and not a danger to one person in that building. That is 1 Corinthians 12:17 leaving room in the chapter itself, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a written question into ground a woman can stand on in a rehearsal room, and God has never asked anybody to pretend, and He was not taken in by seven years of you saying nothing.
That is not a decision and it does not begin one. It is one sentence, said once, today.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the rehearsal room, in the car, wherever you are sitting when you finish reading. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that standing has been given to you rather than earned on a front row, which is exactly why a woman who goes hollow in the second song can talk like this. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely accurate, and how any of it unfolds from here is His to decide. What is being asked of you is one sentence said out loud and nothing said to anybody else today. That is small enough for today, and it stands on the Name and not on how convinced you feel.
- Hollowness that starts in the second song, you are not proof that I have gone cold toward God. Scripture asks where the hearing would be if the whole body were an eye, and a question like that leaves room for a part to say the visible place is not hers.
- Fear that saying this out loud would start something I cannot stop, get out of this room. The Holy Spirit helps our infirmities and the word is full of unfinished things said to God plainly, and in the name of Jesus I am bringing Him the sentence today.
- Lord, You know where I actually fit and You have never asked me to pretend this is it. I thank You, because You have been on that front row with me for seven years, and today I am saying it to You and leaving it with You.
1 Corinthians 12:17
