The file goes to the printer on the twenty-fourth, which means the twenty-second and the twenty-third are what they are, and have been for nine years.
He is at the desk in the back bedroom, which is a bedroom in the same way a garage with a sofa in it is a lounge. Twelve pages laid out. Two columns, because three is wrong at that width and he has explained this to one person who did not ask. A photograph he cropped himself because the one he was sent had a chair in the corner of it and he could not.
He rewrote a paragraph tonight from somebody's submission. Not the facts. Just the shape of it, so that it says what the person meant rather than what they wrote, which took him about eleven minutes and which they will never notice and which is the entire point.
Nine years.
Here is what he knows, and what he has never once said to anybody.
Almost nobody reads it. He is not bitter about this and he is not confused about it. He has watched forty people take a copy at the door and put it in a bag, and he knows what happens to it after that, because he does the same thing with the ones from other places.
And he keeps making it to this standard anyway, because he cannot make it to a lower one. It is not virtue. It is simply how he is built.
Which brings him to the thing that has been circling for about a year and that he cannot say to anybody in that building without it landing as either self-pity or self-promotion, and he would rather be silent for another nine years than have it land as either.
He has one capacity he is genuinely certain about, and he has spent nine years pouring it into twelve pages a month that go into a bag.
Where this does not go
Let me be clear at the start, because you will read this the way you read a submission, which is closely and with a pencil.
Nothing on this page is going to tell you to stop, hand it over, raise it, or say a word to anybody. Not tonight and not by implication in the last paragraph. I cannot see your church or whether anybody else would do it or what would happen to the twenty-fourth, and a page that cannot see those things has no business steering you.
And it is not going to tell you what you are for instead. There is no list at the bottom and no exercise coming.
You are not being maneuvered anywhere, and there is nothing about this you have to settle tonight. That is not caution on my part. Scripture is what makes room for the plain sentence before any decision, and the Holy Spirit has never once needed a man to have his conclusions ordered before He would sit down at the desk with him.
The guiding is not your department
Here is the sentence I want beside the layout, and it is God speaking in the first person.
I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.Psalm 32:8
Read who is doing what.
I will instruct. I will teach. I will guide. Three verbs, all His, none of them delegated to the person being guided.
That matters enormously for a man like you, because the failure mode of a careful mind is to treat guidance as a problem to be solved rather than as something done to you. You have spent a year turning this over, and you will keep turning it over, because turning things over is what you do with everything and it has served you well in every other area of your life.
This is the one area where the turning over is not the mechanism.
You are being guided by somebody who has kept all three verbs on His own side of the sentence, and the working out was never assigned to you. I am not stretching the psalm. Psalm 32:8 has God as the subject of every clause, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written line like that and lets a careful man put something down.
Nine years is not a misreading
Now the accusation underneath, which you have not put into words but which is running.
You have started to wonder whether the nine years mean you got yourself wrong. Whether a man who was actually made for something would have found it by now, and therefore the newsletter is not a mismatch but a verdict.
Nothing in Psalm 32:8 is compatible with that. If the instructing is His and the guiding is His, then nine years in a particular place is not evidence about your discernment, because your discernment was never the mechanism that put you there.
And there is a second thing, which is plainer. You did that work well for nine years. Eleven minutes on a paragraph nobody will notice is not a wasted eleven minutes in a moral universe where God sees in secret. Whatever else is true, that is true.
You have not misread yourself for nine years, and the word puts the guiding on His side rather than making it a test you have been failing. The psalm assigns every verb to God, and the Spirit who searches all things has been in that back bedroom on the twenty-second and the twenty-third for nine years.
And the sentence that has never been said
Here is the deeper part, and it is not about the layout.
For about a year there has been a real, specific, entirely describable thought about your own life that has never been said out loud to God. Not from rebellion. Because every phrasing of it sounded either like self-pity or like a man advertising himself, and you would rather be silent than be either.
So it has been carried and never handed over. That costs more than the twenty-second and the twenty-third do.
He has known for the whole year. He has known the phrasing you rejected as too self-regarding, and He did not hear it that way.
You are welcome to say the sentence you have refused because of how it might sound, and He has never once graded a man on the register of his complaint. The word is full of people saying blunt and unflattering things to God without arranging them first, and the Spirit who was given to help our infirmities is not sitting there assessing your tone.
So come back to the desk, and the twelve pages, and the two columns, and the paragraph you spent eleven minutes on that nobody will ever notice.
The newsletter was never the injury. It is done well, it is a real service, and the eleven minutes were seen.
The injury is a year of a thought that has never been said because of how it might sound, and a man who will not risk sounding self-regarding will end up saying nothing at all, including to God, and that silence has cost more than the layout ever did.
You can say it tonight, out loud, in a back bedroom. And nobody hears it, nobody is diminished by it, and nothing is set in motion.
You are free to say the true sentence out loud right now, and it is not self-pity, not self-promotion and not a complaint against one person in that church. That is Psalm 32:8 with every verb on His side, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a written line into ground a careful man can stand on at a desk on the twenty-second, and God has never asked anybody to phrase it acceptably first, and He was not misled by a year of you not mentioning it.
That is not a decision and it does not begin one. It is one sentence, said once, before the file goes.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, at the desk, on the landing, wherever you are standing when you finish reading. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that standing has been given to you rather than reasoned out by you, which is exactly why a careful man with no conclusions can talk like this. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely correct, and how any of it unfolds from here is His to decide. What is being asked of you is one sentence said out loud and nothing said to anybody else today. That is small enough for tonight, and it stands on the Name and not on how convinced you feel.
- Nine years of a standard nobody asked for, you are not proof that I misread myself. Scripture says I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go, and the guiding is His work and it does not require me to have worked it out first.
- Fear of sounding either self-pitying or self-promoting, get off this desk. The Holy Spirit helps our infirmities and the word is full of blunt unarranged things said to God plainly, and in the name of Jesus I am saying the true sentence to Him tonight.
- Lord, You know where I actually fit and every verb in that psalm belongs to You. I thank You, because the working out was never assigned to me, and tonight I am saying it to You and leaving it with You.
