The Right Room1 Corinthians 12:16

The Class I Have Taught Since Before My Son Was Born

This message is for fifteen years of teaching the same adult class, prepared to the same standard she has always kept, and the discovery on a Thursday night at her own table that she has been dreading Sunday morning for about two years and has never let herself finish the thought

Thursday night, ten o'clock, and the prep is done, because the prep is always done, because that is who she is.

Kitchen table. The good notebook. Three commentaries she does not strictly need and reads anyway. A cup of something she made at nine and has not touched. Her son asleep upstairs, who is fourteen, which is the number she uses when she wants to know how long she has been doing this, because she started the year before he arrived.

Fifteen years teaching that class.

It is a good class. Twenty adults, eight of them there since the beginning. Two people in that room came to faith in it, which is not a thing she says out loud but is a thing she knows. She is prepared, she is clear, she does not waste their time, and once a year somebody tells her that a thing she said four years ago is still with them.

And she is sitting at her own table at ten o'clock on a Thursday having just noticed something that has been true for about two years.

She has been dreading Sunday morning.

Not the class. Not the people. Not any part of it she could point at. Just the whole shape of it, arriving weekly, forever, with no natural end and no reason on earth to stop.

And every time the thought has come close to the surface over those two years, she has cut it off partway through. Not deliberately. It is more that the thought arrives and something in her says do not finish that, and she does not finish it, and she puts the notebook away and goes to bed.

Tonight it got all the way to the end before she could stop it, and now it is out on the table with the commentaries, and she has no idea what to do with a sentence she is not allowed to say to anybody.

What is not going to happen

Let me say it plainly, because you are a careful reader and you will be checking my footing.

Nothing on this page is going to tell you to stop teaching, take a season out, hand it to somebody, or say a word to anybody. Not tonight and not by implication at the end. Nobody here can see your class, your eight originals, or the two who came to faith in that room, and a page that cannot see them has no business steering you.

And it is not going to tell you what you ought to be doing instead. There is no list at the bottom and no exercise coming.

You are not being steered toward a decision, and there is nothing about this you have to settle tonight. That is not me being cautious. Scripture is what makes room for the plain sentence before any decision, and the Holy Spirit has never once needed a woman to have a plan before He would sit at a table with her.

Paul writes down what the part says about itself

Here is a verse people quote past. Read what Paul actually does in it.

And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?1 Corinthians 12:16

He puts the ear's own sentence into the text.

Think about that for a second, because it is not obvious and it is not decorative. He could have described the ear from the outside. He could have written a paragraph explaining what ears sometimes feel. Instead he lets the part speak in the first person about its own situation, out loud, in a letter that was read to a whole church.

Paul does correct the conclusion. He says the ear is wrong about not being in the body. But he does not correct the speaking. He does not say the ear had no business saying anything. He writes it down.

You are permitted to say a plain first person sentence about your own situation, and Scripture puts exactly that kind of sentence into the text rather than treating it as rebellion. I am not stretching that. 1 Corinthians 12:16 quotes the part directly, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written line like that and hands a woman at a kitchen table the standing to finish her own thought.

What you have been protecting

Now let me name what you have been doing for two years, because it is worth naming and it is not a fault.

You have been refusing to finish the thought in order to protect the class.

Not consciously. But somewhere in you there is an accurate calculation that a finished thought becomes a sentence, and a sentence becomes a thing that might get said, and a thing that gets said might disturb a room where eight people have sat since the beginning and two people met God.

So you truncated it. Every time. For two years.

That is not cowardice. It is a form of care, and it has cost you an enormous amount, and it was never actually necessary, because a thought finished in your own kitchen has no way of reaching anybody unless you take it there.

You have not been dishonest for two years, you have been protecting a room by refusing to complete a sentence, and finishing it in private costs that room nothing. The word records a part speaking plainly about itself without any suggestion that the body was harmed by it, and the Spirit who searches all things has been at that table on Thursdays and has never once needed the thought left unfinished.

And the part that has cost most

Here is the deeper thing, and it is not about the class.

For two years there has been a real and recurring fact about your week that has never been said to God out loud. Not from coldness. Because you had trained yourself not to complete it at all, and you cannot bring God a sentence you have never allowed yourself to finish.

Which means the dread has been carried without ever being handed over, and that is a different arrangement and it is far heavier.

He has known the whole time. He has known the ending of that sentence for two years, including the parts you have never reached.

You are welcome to finish the sentence in His hearing, and He has never once asked you to leave a true thing half said in order to be safe. The word puts the first person sentence in the text without embarrassment, and the Spirit who was given to help our infirmities is not waiting for you to arrive at a safer version.

The breakthrough

So come back to the table, and the good notebook, and the three commentaries, and a cup you made at nine and never drank.

The class was never the injury. It is good, they are good, and two people met God in that room.

The injury is two years of a thought you would not let finish, cut off every time for the sake of a room it was never going to reach, and the cutting off has cost you more than the finishing ever would have.

You can finish it tonight, out loud, at your own table. And it reaches nobody, disturbs nobody, and commits you to nothing.

You are free to complete the sentence right now and say it out loud to God, and it is not rebellion, not disloyalty and not a threat to one person in that class. That is 1 Corinthians 12:16 with the part speaking in the first person in the text itself, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a written line into ground a woman can stand on at a kitchen table at ten at night, and God has never asked anybody to leave a thought half thought, and He has known the ending of yours for two years.

That is not a decision and it does not begin one. It is one sentence, finished once, before you go up.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, at the table, on the stairs, wherever you are standing when you finish reading. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that standing has been given to you rather than earned over fifteen years of Sundays, which is exactly why a woman who has been dreading Sunday can talk like this. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely accurate, and how any of it unfolds from here is His to decide. What is being asked of you is one finished sentence said out loud and nothing said to anybody else today. That is small enough for tonight, and it stands on the Name and not on how convinced you feel.

  1. Thought I have refused to finish for two years, you can be finished tonight. Scripture puts the ear's own sentence about itself into the text on purpose, so a part of the body naming its own situation out loud is not rebellion and it never was.
  2. Instinct that stops the sentence halfway to protect that room, get off my table. The Holy Spirit searches all things and the word records a part speaking plainly without the body taking any harm from it, and in the name of Jesus I am finishing it out loud tonight.
  3. Lord, You know where I actually fit and You have known the end of that sentence for two years. I thank You, because You have never asked me to leave a true thing half said, and tonight I am finishing it and leaving it with You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
