She sat in the last row and she kept her coat on her lap the whole way through, which is a thing people do when part of them is still deciding whether to stay.
It is a small building. Low sun coming in through the plain glass on the left, cutting across the rows in a way that makes the dust visible and makes everybody who is in it look better than they are. An old dog asleep in the aisle who plainly belongs to somebody and has been coming longer than half the congregation. A kettle going somewhere out of sight, which is the actual sound of Christian hospitality and always has been.
Eight years since she last came to one of these.
There is no story worth telling about why she stopped. That is the thing people never believe. There was no scandal and no crisis and no one moment. There was a hard season and a stretch of Sundays where getting there felt like more than she had, and then a run of months where not going stopped being a decision and started being a fact, and then it had been two years, and then it had been eight, and the longer it went the more impossible it became to walk back in without an explanation.
So she came, this morning, and she sat at the back with her coat on her lap. And people were glad to see her in the uncomplicated way that good people are. And underneath that she is carrying a thing she has not said, which is that whatever place she once had in this body, she assumes it was reassigned a long time ago, quietly, the way a seat gets taken when you do not come back from the interval.
Nothing is going to be asked of you here
Let me say what this is not, first, because you have your coat on your lap and I would rather you put it down.
This is not going to tell you what your gift is. Not by naming it, not by describing you closely enough that you take it as a diagnosis, and not with a list at the end you can measure yourself against. There is no questionnaire and there is no gentler version of one.
And there is no explaining to do. Not to me, and as far as this page is concerned, not to anybody. You are not going to be asked where you have been.
You are not standing outside anything waiting to be readmitted, and there is no account of the eight years being examined before you can be let back in. That is not me being warm at you. Scripture is what says it, and the Holy Spirit has never once required a woman to give an account of her absence before He would sit down beside her.
The word is members, and it is not a role
There is a sentence in Romans that I want in front of you before anything else, because it settles the question underneath the question.
So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.Romans 12:5
Members one of another. Not officers. Not volunteers. Members, in the old sense of the word, the sense in which a hand is a member of a body.
A hand does not hold a post. A hand cannot resign, and it cannot be replaced by an eager hand that turned up in the meantime, and it does not stop being a hand during the years it is in a pocket.
That is the difference nobody explains, and it is the whole of the ache. Roles get reassigned. That is what roles are for. Membership in a body is not that kind of thing at all.
You are a member of that body this morning on the same terms you were a member of it nine years ago, because the word for what you are was never a word for a job. I am not softening the language to comfort you. Romans 12:5 says members one of another, and the same Spirit who moved Paul to write it is the one sitting in the back row while you read this.
Set, and nothing in the verse expires
Then the sentence in Corinthians that people quote and hurry past.
But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.1 Corinthians 12:18
Set. Not seated pending good attendance. Set.
Every one of them. Individually, by name, including the ones who went quiet.
As it hath pleased Him. A decision, taken on purpose, by someone who wanted it this way.
Read the verse again and look for the clause about lapsing. It is not there. There is no line about the arrangement expiring after a certain number of missed Sundays, and there was never a mechanism by which a person could be quietly unset while they were not looking.
You were set in this body by God, it pleased Him to do it, and eight years of absence never once got near that decision. That is what 1 Corinthians 12:18 says in the plainest words the language had, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written line like that and lets it come to rest in a person rather than merely be true at them.
The thing about coming back that nobody says out loud
Here is what I think happened, and you can put it down if it is not yours.
Somewhere in the fourth or fifth year, the not going stopped being about tiredness and started being about the walk back in. Because a month is nothing and a year is awkward and eight years feels like something that requires a speech.
And so a woman ends up believing that the way back in is through an explanation, and that until she can produce one she is a guest.
There is no explanation required. Not because the years did not happen, and not because they were nothing. Because the thing you are trying to get back into was never a thing you could be outside of by not attending it.
You do not have to buy your way back into a place that was never rented to you in the first place. The word says God did the setting and that it pleased Him, and the Spirit gives to each one as He wills rather than as each one keeps up, and neither of those sentences has a clause about a run of missed mornings.
And none of this is a criticism of the people who kept coming while you did not. They were not holding your seat, and they were not conspiring to give it away. They were just being at church, which is a small ordinary faithful thing, and it has nothing to do with what is settled about you.
So come back to the last row, and the low sun, and the coat folded on your lap in case.
The absence was never the injury. The injury is a conclusion you came to in the fifth or sixth year, that a place unattended is a place forfeited, and there was nobody sitting beside you to say that is not how a body works.
There is no forfeit. There is a setting, it was done by God, it pleased Him to do it, and it has never been revised, reviewed or reassigned.
You are in this body, He set you here, He never once unset you, and there is no explanation owing before you are allowed to believe that. That is Romans 12:5 and 1 Corinthians 12:18 saying the same thing from two sides, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a written line into ground a person can rest on in a back row, and God does not repossess members, and He was not looking away the year you stopped coming.
That is not something to earn back over the next eight years. It is something to say out loud in a back row on a Sunday morning, and then to go and do the ordinary thing you were going to do anyway, sitting differently while you do it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the row, in the porch, wherever you are sitting when you finish reading. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that membership has been given to you rather than kept up by you, which is exactly why a woman with eight quiet years behind her can speak like this. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely accurate, and how any of it unfolds from here is His to decide. What is being asked of you is two sentences and a coat you can finally put down. That is small enough for this morning, and it stands on the Name and not on how convinced you feel.
- Eight years of being away, you are not the deed to my place. Scripture says we being many are one body in Christ and every one members one of another, and that belonging was never a tenancy I let lapse.
- Explanation I thought I owed at the door, you are not required of me. The Holy Spirit gives to each one as He wills and the word says God set the members every one of them as it pleased Him, and in the name of Jesus I am sitting where I was set.
- Lord, You set me in this body Yourself and You never once unset me. I thank You, because nothing about those years reached Your decision, and this morning I am sitting in my place gladly.
