The meal finished about forty minutes ago and nobody has moved.
That is the sign of a good night, and everyone in that house knows it. The plates are still where they were pushed. Somebody has brought out the small glasses. The oldest woman in the room has started the story she tells, and three people who have heard it maybe eighty times are leaning in anyway because of how she does the part with the door.
And there is a man in the kitchen with both hands in the water.
Nobody sent him. Nobody would ever send him. He got up when the third round of tea went out, and he started at the far end of the counter, and he has been working quietly through it since, and from where he stands he can hear about two thirds of the story, which is enough to know when to laugh.
Twelve years he has been part of that community. He is there every week. He would tell you, honestly, that he loves it.
And if you dried his hands and sat him down and asked him what he is for, he could not answer you. He has watched other people be told. He has watched a young man get pulled aside and told he has a gift for teaching, and watched a woman be handed the prayer list because everyone could see it in her. Nobody has ever pulled him aside. He has decided, without ever putting it into words, that the reason is that there is nothing to pull him aside about, and that the sink is what is left when the real things have been handed out.
What is not going to happen on this page
Let me clear this away first, so you can read the rest without bracing for it.
I am not going to tell you what your gift is. Not by naming it, not by describing you so closely that you take it as a diagnosis, and not with a tidy list at the bottom that you can run your finger down until something fits. There is no questionnaire coming and there is no gentler version of one.
That is not me being careful. It is that the chapter everyone reaches for when a person asks what am I for does not answer that question either, and once you see that it does not, the relief is enormous.
You are not about to be classified, and you are not waiting on a verdict that has been delayed twelve years. I am not saying that as an opinion about you. Scripture is what says it, in 1 Corinthians 12, and the Holy Spirit has never once required a person to be labeled before He would use them.
Paul does not answer the question he is asked
The church at Corinth had turned the gifts into a ranking. That is the situation Paul is writing into, and you can feel him decline the terms of it.
He does not produce a better ranking. He does not hand out an improved list. He starts talking about a body, and about how absurd a body would be if the parts spent their time deciding which of them counted.
Then he puts a sentence in the mouth of the part that feels spare, and it is worth reading slowly, because you may recognize the voice.
If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body?1 Corinthians 12:15
Notice what the foot does not say. The foot does not say I have no function. Feet work beautifully and constantly. The foot says I am not the other one, therefore I am not really in.
That is exactly the arithmetic a man does over a sink. Not I do nothing. I do plenty. It is I am not the one who gets pulled aside, therefore I must be the overflow.
You have been measuring yourself against parts of the body whose work is simply more visible than yours, and the conclusion you drew from that gap is the one thing in this chapter God explicitly corrects. His word puts the false conclusion into writing so a person could hear it out loud and see what it was, and His Spirit does not stand over you nodding along with the foot.
Then comes one sentence, and it is about you
Paul makes his argument and then he lands it in a single line.
But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.1 Corinthians 12:18
There are three things in it and every one of them has your name on it.
God set. Not the schedule. Not whoever was short of hands in September. Not the accident of where you happened to be standing when the jobs went out.
Every one of them. Individually, not in a batch. Not just the obvious ones and the useful ones and the ones who photograph well. Every one.
As it hath pleased Him. That is not a shrug and it is not a compromise. That is a decision, taken with intent, by someone who wanted it this way.
You were placed into this body by God Himself, deliberately, and the spot you are standing in tonight is the spot He chose. That is what 1 Corinthians 12:18 says in the plainest words the language had, and the same Spirit who breathed that line is the one who makes it land on a person as though it were addressed to them. Placement is not the leftovers after the gifts are handed round. According to that sentence, placement is the thing God did first.
And He keeps going, and it gets stronger rather than softer.
Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary.1 Corinthians 12:22
Necessary. Not tolerated. Not welcomed in kindly. Not included so that nobody feels bad. Cannot be done without.
The question that can actually be answered tonight
Here is the quiet exchange that happens when you read the chapter instead of a list.
What am I for is a question no page can answer for you, and chasing it is what has kept a good man at the sink for twelve years feeling like the overflow. But the chapter answers a different question, and that one can be settled before the water goes cold: whose body am I in, and who put me where I am standing?
You already know the second half. You know where you are. It is probably so ordinary that it has never once occurred to you to count it. The person you always end up next to. The job everybody assumes you will do and nobody has ever named out loud. The corner of the room you drift to. The hour after the meal.
That is not the residue. According to that verse, that is an arrangement.
You have a place, it was decided, and the deciding was done by God rather than by circumstance. His word is explicit that the setting was His pleasure, and the Spirit gives to each one as He wills rather than as a roomful of people happen to sort themselves out. Where you are is not an accident God has kindly agreed to work around.
And none of this makes you an assessor of anybody else. That never becomes yours. This is about one person and one sink.
So come back to the kitchen, and the water going lukewarm, and the good talk carrying on without you in the next room.
The waiting has been the whole injury. Not the work. The work is fine. What has been quietly wearing you down is a verdict you assumed had been passed on you in silence, because the announcement you were waiting for never came in the form you expected.
There is no verdict. There never was one. There is a decision, it was made about you by God, and it has already been carried out.
You are in this body, He put you here, and He chose the spot, and none of that is pending. That is one written line of Paul's letter, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a written line into a settled fact in a person's chest, and God does not keep spare parts, and He was not short of hands the day He set you down.
That is not a thing to work out over the next year. It is a thing to say out loud in a kitchen tonight, with the water still running, and then to go back to the ordinary thing you were always going to do, standing differently.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the kitchen, in the doorway, wherever you are standing when you finish reading. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that membership has been given to you rather than earned by you, which is exactly why you can speak like this with nothing to show for it. Scripture is the ground under every word of it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely accurate, and how any of it unfolds from here is His to decide. What is being asked of you is two sentences and a dish towel. That is small enough to do tonight, and it stands on the Name and not on how convinced you feel.
- Sink full of plates, you are not my verdict. Scripture says God arranged the members of the body, each one of them, as He chose, so where I am standing tonight was His decision and not whatever was left over.
- Fear that I am the overflow, you have no place in this house. The Holy Spirit gives to each one as He wills and the word calls the parts that look feeblest necessary, and in the name of Jesus I am standing where I was set.
- Lord, You set me in this body Yourself and it pleased You to do it. I thank You, because the deciding was Yours, and tonight I am standing in my place gladly.
