Somebody shouts photo, and before the word is finished she has both hands out for the coats.
It is automatic. Somebody's phone gets held up, everybody bunches in the way people do, two of the men do the thing with the bunny ears, and she is already six feet away with four coats over her arm and a grocery bag of somebody's leftovers, calling out that they need to squash up on the left.
She takes the picture. She takes three, because one of them always blinks. She hands the phone back and somebody says she is a star, and she says nothing much, and everyone goes to get their coats off her.
She has done this for ten years. Ten years of meals, of setting out and clearing away, of the same hall and mostly the same faces. She is on nobody's list of problems and everybody would say she is lovely.
There is no photograph of her in any of it.
Not one. Not from the harvest supper, not from the anniversary, not from the day it snowed and half of them stayed till nine. She has held the coats in every single one, and if you laid all those pictures out on a table you would find a room full of people she loves and a small blank space just outside the edge where somebody was standing.
And you know this feeling from somewhere, whatever your version of the coats is. You are in it. You have been in it for years. You do the thing that needs doing and you are glad to. And underneath all of it sits a quiet, unglamorous suspicion that you are the spare one, that if you were cropped out of the picture the picture would look no different, and that nobody would think to mention it.
Extra is a word the body has never used
Paul walks into this exact feeling in a letter, and the way he does it is so strange that people usually read past it. He does not argue with the person who feels spare. He lets the spare part speak.
If the foot should say, "Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body," that would not make it any less a part of the body.1 Corinthians 12:15
Read what happens in that sentence. The foot says it. The foot means it. The foot is entirely sincere, has looked carefully at the hand, and has concluded, on the evidence available to a foot, that it does not belong.
And the verdict comes back in five words: that changes nothing at all.
You are a member of this body right now, and your own opinion of yourself was never given a vote on it. That is not me flattering you; the written word puts the objection in the mouth of the part that feels least like the others and then simply overrules it, and it is His Spirit who does the arranging, which is why your assessment is not the deciding one.
Notice too that nobody in that passage tells the foot what a foot is for. There is no explanation, no reassurance about the noble work of feet. There is a fact about membership, and then the letter moves on.
The one you keep looking at is not the measure
Here is what a foot does. It looks at a hand.
That is the whole mechanism of feeling spare, and it is astonishingly consistent. The person you compare yourself with is never picked at random. It is always somebody whose contribution is visible in a way yours is not: the one who speaks, the one people ring, the one whose name gets said from the front. The quiet grading has been going on against a body part nobody ever designed you to be.
And I am not going to correct that by telling you what you are instead. Nobody on this page is going to hand you a label, a category or a nicer word for coat holder. A label would only be a smaller box than the one you are in, and it would leave the same question underneath it: does this earn me a place?
You have a place that was never issued on the strength of what you contribute, and you had it before the first coat was ever handed to you. Scripture puts the arranging of the members in God's hands and calls it His choosing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who did the placing rather than a schedule, a need or a gap that came up.
Ten years of coats did not buy anything
I want to be careful here, because there is a way of hearing this that would take something from you, and I am not doing that.
The coats were not wasted and they were not a mistake. Ten years of quiet service is a beautiful thing and God has not missed a minute of it. The trouble is only the direction the ledger runs in: the serving has been done as though it were the thing keeping you in the room, and it never was.
Which means the good news is slightly odd: nothing you did this year decided whether you stay, and nothing you fail to do next year will decide it either. If service could buy a place, service could also lose one, and then everybody in that hall would be one bad season away from being cropped out.
You belong before you are useful, and you were already in before anybody found a job for you. The word puts belonging on God's arrangement rather than on output, and it is His Spirit who joins a person into a body, which is a work nobody has ever done for themselves by being helpful.
Nothing is being asked of you here
No commitment. No next role. No suggestion about what you might be suited to, and no hint that you ought to be doing something other than what you already do.
This page is not recruiting. If you go on holding the coats for another ten years, that will be a good ten years, and if you never do it again, your place is exactly as settled. That is what settled means. It is not a status you keep by continuing to qualify for it.
You are held in place by God's own arrangement, and it is not on trial this week. Scripture says He arranged the members as He chose, which is a decision already taken and not one being reviewed, and His Spirit is the one who keeps you joined on the weeks when you feel like a spare part and on the weeks when you do not think about it at all.
So stop taking the picture for a minute.
Not because taking it was wrong. Because there is something to receive here and both your arms are full of other people's coats, and this one cannot be received while you are proving anything.
This is yours right now, in a hall with the chairs half stacked: your place is settled, and it was settled by God rather than earned by you. The written word overrules the foot's own resignation in a single line, and His Spirit is the one who put you where you are, so nothing here waits on you feeling more central first.
You are not the spare one, and you are the number He counts from. Scripture says so about the parts that seem feeblest, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a written line land as ground rather than as a kindness.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in the hall or in the parking lot, and let somebody hear you if they happen to be passing. A place in Christ's body belongs to you as a gift, and that is the ground under these words: the authority is His, delegated, and an ambassador carries the King's decision rather than his own estimate of himself. It takes no great quantity of faith to speak to a thing, only a mouth and a target with a name on it. Yours is not the coats and it is not the people in the photograph, who love you. Yours is the half suspicion that you are the spare part. Speak to that one. Scripture is the ground under every word of this and the Holy Spirit is what makes it live in a half stacked hall, and what He does with your place from here, and where He puts you next, belongs to Him.
- Armful of coats by the door, you are a kindness and you were never the price of my place here. Scripture says a foot that decides it is not a hand is not one bit less a part of the body, so my opinion of me does not amend God's arrangement of me.
- Half suspicion that I am the spare one, you are overruled. In the name of Jesus you get no vote on my membership, and the Holy Spirit who joined me into this body has never once described me as extra.
- Lord, You are the one who arranged this, and You arranged me into it on purpose. I thank You, because Scripture says the placing was Your own choosing and never a vacancy I happened to fill, and sitting here with my hands open is what I am doing instead of proving anything.
1 Corinthians 12:15
