I Stopped Serving When I Got Ill

It went in about nine months and it was four years ago and there is not much more to say about the medical part.

She did two things in that church for twenty-six years. It does not matter what they were. One of them was a Thursday and the other one was most Sundays, and between them they accounted for a great deal of her week and rather more of her sense of the shape of things.

Neither of them is possible now. That is not a matter of effort. It is a matter of a body that does what it does now.

Everybody was extremely kind about it.

That is not sarcasm. They were. A woman came round with food for two weeks, which turned into a month. Somebody drives her most weeks. There has never been one word from anybody that was not warm.

And she is sixty-eight and sitting in a comfortable chair in a bright hall with three people around her laughing about something, and she is carrying a sentence she has never once said out loud in four years.

She thinks the doing was what made her one of them.

Not in a way anybody said or believed. In the way a person quietly builds an account of their own life over twenty-six years without noticing they are building it. She was in that church, and she was one of them, and she did those two things, and she has never been able to separate those facts from each other.

And two of them stopped four years ago, and she has been waiting ever since to find out whether the third one did too.

What this page will not do

Let me say it before anything else, so you can hear the rest with your shoulders down.

Nothing here is going to suggest a way you could still contribute. There is no paragraph coming about the things you can still do, no gentle redirection toward a role that fits your energy. That would be a page agreeing that the doing is what settles it, which is exactly the thing that has been hurting you.

And nothing here is going to tell you what you are for.

And nothing here is going to ask you for anything at all beyond one small thing with your hands.

You are not going to be found a job, and nothing here makes usefulness the proof of anything. That is not caution on my part. Scripture handles this in one verse that names what a person is rather than what they do, and the Holy Spirit has never once required a woman to be able to carry something before He would deal with her.

No more a servant

Here is the sentence, and it swaps one word for another on purpose.

Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.Galatians 4:7

No more a servant.

Now, servant in that passage is not an insult, and Paul is not being rude about service. He is making a legal point about status, and the argument is about slavery and sonship in a household under Roman law, and he is saying the category has changed.

A servant's place in a house depends entirely on the work. That is the definition of the relationship. If the work stops, the arrangement stops, and everybody in the ancient world understood that without needing it explained.

A son's place does not. A son who can do nothing at all is still a son. There is no mechanism by which a son becomes less of one.

And then the second half: if a son, then an heir. Heir is a word about a future you receive without earning, and it cannot be revoked for underperformance.

You are a daughter and an heir rather than a servant, and that distinction is precisely about whether the work is what holds the relationship in place. I am not stretching that. Galatians 4:7 makes the change of category the whole argument, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written line like that and lands it on a woman in a comfortable chair on a Sunday morning.

The account you built without noticing

Now the honest thing, and it is not a criticism.

Over twenty-six years you built an account of your own place in that church, and nobody helped you build it and nobody ever said it out loud, and it was made almost entirely of things you did.

That is not a fault. It is what happens. A person who serves faithfully for a quarter of a century will inevitably start reading their own belonging off the calendar, because the calendar is the visible part.

And when the calendar emptied, the account had nothing left in it, and there was no separate record of your place because you had never kept one.

There is a separate record. You did not keep it. He did, and it was written in the language of sonship rather than service, and the emptying of a calendar did not touch a line of it.

You have never once been in that building as a servant whose place depended on the Thursday, and Scripture puts your status in a category that has no work test in it. That is Galatians 4:7 in its own legal terms, and the Spirit who searches all things has been in that hall for all thirty years, the twenty-six and the four.

And the kindness is not a demotion

One more thing, because I think it is doing something to you that nobody has named.

The kindness is real. The food, the lifts, the warmth. All of it is real and none of it is pity.

But kindness received feels different from kindness given, and after twenty-six years of being the one who gave it, being on the other side has been quietly telling you a story about which side of the line you are now on.

There is no line. That is the thing. There is one household and everybody in it is on both sides of that exchange at different times, and the four years have simply been your turn.

You have not moved from one category to another, and the word gives no separate status for the ones who are currently being carried. The word says heir without any conditions attached, and the Spirit who bears witness with our spirit is not adjusting His account of you based on your Thursdays.
