Read Out In Front Of Everybody

This message is for a man at a men's retreat whose result was read out to the whole room by somebody meaning it warmly, and who has spent the two hours since then discovering that being described publicly and being seen are not the same thing at all

Two hours later and he is still at the far end of the porch with a plate he is not eating from.

Good evening out there. Thirty men, mostly. Somebody turning meat on a grill with unnecessary seriousness. A long table with plates and coffee and a bowl of something a wife sent that is going faster than anybody predicted. Long grass in the field behind, going gold, moving a little.

He has laughed twice since it happened and both times he meant it.

What happened was this. After the afternoon session they had done the exercise, and the man leading it, who is a genuinely good man, decided to read a few of the results out loud, because it was a warm room and everybody had enjoyed it and it seemed like the kind of thing that would land well.

He read three. One of them was his.

He said the word, and then he said something generous about it, about how anybody who has spent five minutes with this man knows it is true. And the room made the noise a room makes. And two of the men near him clapped him on the shoulder, and it was affectionate and completely sincere.

And he sat there while it was happening and had a feeling arrive that he has not been able to shake for two hours, which he would not be able to explain to anybody on that porch.

He was described in front of thirty men, warmly and accurately, and it did not feel like being seen.

It felt like being read out.

And underneath that there is something older, which is that he has been in rooms his whole life where people say generous things about him, and he has never once been able to tell whether any of them can actually see him or whether they are all working from the same short summary.

What is not coming

Let me say it plainly before anything else, because you are on a porch with a plate you are not eating from.

This page is not going to give you a better word, or a more private one, or one that goes deeper than what got read out. I am not going to describe you closely enough that you can take it as a diagnosis, and there is no list at the end for you to find yourself on.

And it is not going to say the man who read it out was careless. He was warm and he meant it and he was right about the part he can see.

You are not being handled kindly by people who cannot see you, and there is no more penetrating description out there that would settle what those two hours unsettled. That is not me smoothing it over. Scripture is what says it, and the Holy Spirit has never once needed a man announced before He would deal with him.

The scene that answers this exactly

There is a moment in the first chapter of John that reads like it was written for a man on a porch.

A man called Nathanael is brought to Jesus by a friend, and Jesus says something generous about him out loud, in front of people, before they have met.

And Nathanael does not enjoy it. His answer is basically: how do you know anything about me.

Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig tree, I saw thee.John 1:48

Look at what Jesus does not do. He does not repeat the compliment. He does not defend it or expand it.

He names a place and a moment that only Nathanael knew about.

Under the fig tree. Before Philip called. Which is to say: before there was any public description of you at all, before anybody said your name in front of anybody, I was already looking.

You were seen under the tree, before the room, before the exercise, before anybody had a word to say about you. I am not embroidering that. John 1:48 is a scene about the difference between being described and being seen, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written line like that and makes it land on a man at the end of a porch.

Why the public word felt thin

Now the honest mechanics, because it will help.

A description is made of what a person can observe from outside. That is not a criticism of the man with the sheet. It is the definition of a description.

Being seen is a different thing entirely. It has to include the parts you did not perform, the hour under the tree that nobody was there for, the thing you were like when nothing was being asked of you.

Which is why the applause did not do what applause is supposed to do. It was not aimed at that man. It could not be. Nobody in that room was under the tree.

You have never been reduced to the summary a room could produce, because the seeing that matters started somewhere nobody else was standing. The word puts the seeing before the calling in that sentence, and the Spirit who searches all things is not working from what the porch can observe.

And Nathanael's answer is worth watching

What happens next is the part people skip.

Nathanael, who two minutes earlier was skeptical and a bit sharp, comes completely apart in one line. He goes from cynical to confessing in a single sentence, and the thing that did it was not an argument.

It was being told where he had been sitting.

That is all it took. One detail from a moment he had not told anybody about.

You are known at that level of detail right now, and the evidence you have been waiting for from a room was never going to arrive from a room. That is John 1 in its own sequence, and the Spirit who was given to us is not a spectator in the field behind the porch.

And this is not a reason to go back in and be cool with the man who read it out. Go and be warm. He did a kind thing kindly. The ache was never his to fix.

The breakthrough

So come back to the porch, and the grill, and the long grass going gold, and a plate you have not touched in two hours.

The reading out was never the injury. It was a warm man doing a warm thing in a good room, and the word was fair.

The injury is much older, and it surfaced tonight because a public description landed on a private question. You have spent a life being spoken well of and never being sure that anybody was looking at you rather than at a summary of you.

Somebody was looking. Somebody has been looking the whole time, from before anybody said your name.

You were seen under the fig tree, before the calling and before the room, and no summary read aloud has ever been the thing that made you known. That is John 1:48 in its own words, and the Holy Spirit is the one who turns a written line into ground a man can stand on at the end of a porch with the light going, and God has never worked from an introduction, and He was not learning about you this afternoon.

That is not something to resolve over the next eleven years. It is something to say out loud on a porch with the grass moving in the field, and then to go back down and eat something and be with the men, standing differently while you do it.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, on the porch, in the field, wherever you are standing when you finish reading. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and that knowing has been given to you rather than conferred on you by a room, which is exactly why a man who has just been read out can speak like this. Scripture is the ground under it, the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely accurate, and how any of it unfolds from here is His to decide. What is being asked of you is one word said out loud and one sheet of paper set down. That is small enough for tonight, and it stands on the Name and not on how convinced you feel.

  1. Word that got read out to a room, you are not the same thing as being seen. Scripture says Jesus told Nathanael I saw thee when thou wast under the fig tree, and that seeing happened before anybody in the room knew there was anything to say.
  2. Question I have carried into every room about whether anybody is actually looking, you are answered and you can go. The Holy Spirit searches all things and the word puts the seeing before the calling, and in the name of Jesus I am seen already and I am seen now.
  3. Lord, You saw me under the tree before Philip ever called me. I thank You, because You were never working from an introduction, and tonight I am going back down that porch known.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
